New Blog Design

03 May 2021 » Opinion

As I said at the very bottom of my 2020 Retrospective post, one of my personal projects for 2021 was to migrate this blog from Wordpress to Jekyll. I am not sure there was a clear goal, I just thought it would be fun. With all the time that I have spent at home during this long British winter in lockdown, it has been a distraction that has kept my mind busy. Finally, after so long and so much time invested, here it is. I hope you like it!

Issues

I started last summer, but I found many issues along the way.

  • I do not “speak” Ruby, the language used by Jekyll.
  • Although I used to work as a web developer for a living, that was more than 10 years ago.
  • Finding a design that I liked has taken me ages. I tried may options until I found this one based on Material Design.
  • Jekyll does not support comments out of the box. I looked for different options, even started coding two different solutions, but it is much more complex than what I initally thought. Finally, I have chosen Isso.
